From the days I studied film & photography at Derby University in the early 80's, I have had an attraction for urban
landscapes. Already at that that time, my diploma exhibition consisted of a large number of cityscapes
from Derby city and neighbouring cities around in The Midlands. The series of urban night photographs of Trondheim city is a
direct result of this fascination for the urban environment.
The artificial nightlight can be surprisingly soft allowing for surfaces, lines and shadow effects to be highlighted. At
the same time the darkness adds a natural frame around buildings and objects in such a manner that their inherent architecture
is highlighted. With the years – and possibly with increased photographic matureness – an interest in landscape
photography has emerged. Often it is the balance between elements combined with light and shadow effects, that attracts my
attention. In majority of the cases I choose to picture the landscapes in black & white.
